Student
Travel Fund for the MESA 2006 Meeting
Application deadline: September 15,
2006.
MESA’s Board of Directors has established a modest fund
to help subsidize travel expenses for students who are presenting
papers at the MESA annual meeting. For the 2006 meeting, MESA
will award four $250 grants.
To be eligible for a travel grant, applicants must meet the
following
criteria:
1) current student in a degree-seeking
program during academic year 2006-07;
2) current MESA student member for 2006;
3) presenting a paper as part of the official MESA 2006
meeting program;
4) must travel a minimum of 250 miles to attend the Boston,
Massachusetts meeting;
5) must not be receiving funding to attend the meeting from
any other source;
6) must present their paper at the MESA meeting as scheduled.
To apply, students should submit a letter
of application by email or mail outlining their eligibility,
and have their academic department chair submit to MESA a
letter confirming that they are not receiving departmental
support to attend the meeting.
All eligible applicants’ names will be entered into
a lottery system for random selection. The awards will be
announced shortly thereafter and will be made by cash payment
at the MESA meeting.
Graduate Student Paper
Award 2006
University and College Faculty are invited to nominate graduate
student research papers on any aspect of post 600 CE Middle
Eastern Studies for the new MESA Graduate Student Paper Award.
Only the work of current graduate students is eligible, but
papers produced during July 1, 2005 through June 30, 2006
will be considered. Papers must be no longer than 7500 words
and may not have been published by the time of submission.
They must be received at the Secretariat by July
1, 2006. Papers will be reviewed by a selection committee
composed of MESA members. Papers will be evaluated according
to originality of research and conceptualization (or interpretation),
cogency of argument, and clarity of writing. Proof of student
status must be provided with the submission. 2006 Malcolm
H. Kerr Dissertation Award candidates are not eligible for
the 2006 Graduate Student Paper Award. The award will be announced
at the annual meeting awards ceremony and the winner will
be recognized in the MESA Newsletter. Submission deadline:
July 1, 2006.
Graduate Student Representative
to MESA’s Board of Directors
for the Term November 22, 2006 to November 20, 2007
MESA’s Board of Directors calls for nominations of PhD
program graduate students to serve a one-year term as a consultant
to the board. The student will attend the spring and fall
2007 MESA Board of Directors meetings, representing student
interests to the board. The student may also be called upon
to provide input on issues as they arise, and to participate
in virtual board meetings.
A. Eligibility
1) Required: Student membership in MESA
in the years 2006 and 2007.
2) Must have reached an intermediate level, 2nd year or
more of PhD study.
3) North American residence during the academic year 2006-2007.
NOTE: Preference will be given to a student
who is able to demonstrate 1) active participation in MESA
(e.g. participation in the annual conference, or other MESA
related activities such as IJMES or the MESA Bulletin)
or, 2) service to one of MESA’s affiliated organizations
or, 3) participation in MEOC-related or other organized outreach
activities.
B. Nomination procedures
Self-nomination encouraged.
Submit cover letter, CV and two letters of reference (one
from advisor and one from other faculty member or relevant
supervisor) by September 15, 2006 to:

The term will begin November 22, 2006 and end on November
20, 2007. It is expected that the graduate student representative
will attend the MESA 2006 meeting to meet with the current
graduate student representative to facilitate the transition.
