Call for Papers

42nd Annual Meeting of the
Middle East Studies Association


November 22-25
Washington, DC

IMPORTANT

You must be a MESA member for 2008 and pre-register for the meeting in order for your proposal to be reviewed by the program committee. If you do not meet these requirements, your submission will not be considered.

Area Covered

MESA is primarily concerned with the area encompassing Iran, Turkey, Afghanistan, Israel, Pakistan, and the countries of the Arab World from the 7th century to modern times. Other regions including Spain, Southeastern Europe, China and the former Soviet Union, also are included for the periods in which these territories were parts of the Middle Eastern empires or under the influence of Middle Eastern civilization. Submissions in any discipline are welcome. The 2008 meeting does not have a specific theme; all topics are welcome.

All participants must submit electronically via MESA’s website. See links to instructions and forms at right.

Only submissions from MESA members will be reviewed by the program committee. Please make certain your membership is current for 2008 before submitting your proposal. Pre-registration is required at the time you submit your proposal.

Requirements for Participation

Membership

Become a member or renew your membership

Participation in the MESA meeting is restricted to MESA members. Your proposal will not be processed by the Secretariat or reviewed by the Program Committee if you are not a MESA member. To become a member, submit a membership application and membership dues at the time you submit your proposal. Participants who are visiting foreign scholars or non-Middle East specialists may request a one-time exemption from this requirement. Complete the request for membership waiver form found here. Exemptions are decided on a case-by-case basis and are not automatic. MESA encourages membership of all annual meeting participants. Membership dues for 2008 are income based:

**for retired membership, one must have been a fellow or associate MESA member for 10 consecutive years and be retired.
***for members resident in Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, Taiwan, and Western European countries, please add $15 to the dues to cover the cost of foreign mailings.

Registration

Register for the conference

All participants must pre-register at the time they submit their proposal. There are no exceptions. Non-member registration fees apply to those who have been exempted from the membership requirement. 2008 registration fees are:

Payment: MESA accepts checks or money orders (in US dollars drawn on a US bank), and Visa, Mastercard, and American Express. Those wishing to charge their dues/fees to a credit card may do so on-line using MESA's secure shopping cart or can submit to MESA by post or phone the following information: card number, expiration date, statement of authorization for charge, and signature. Please also provide the billing street address and zip code.

Refunds: All persons who have a paper or panel rejected are entitled to a refund of registration fees upon request, provided that the request is made by October 15, 2008. Program participants who withdraw from the program may request a refund of their registration fees up until August

Restrictions on Participation: Only one abstract per person may be submitted. A person can submit an abstract and also be scheduled on a different panel as a chair or discussant, or participate in a roundtable or thematic conversation, but only one abstract per person may be submitted. No individual may participate in more than two sessions.

 

Submission Deadline

The electronic submission system will be available until 5:00 p.m., MST, on Friday, February 15, 2008. Late submissions will not be considered and the Secretariat staff will not be able to respond to them. All submissions must conform to the guidelines listed in the Call for Papers.

Instructions and Links to Forms

Please note: you must submit the appropriate form for each instance of participation on the program. For example, if you are a panel organizer, a panel chair, and a paper presenter, you must submit three forms, one as organizer, one as chair, and one as a paper presenter.
