Panel Defends Academic
Freedom: Speakers Discuss the History of Free Speech in the
Classroom
Lisa Hirschmann
Columbia Daily Spectator, February 22, 2005
After public criticism fell upon Columbia
University, a panel of professors discussed academic freedom.
Academic freedom protects professors and their right to teach
topics that diverge from the opinions of students and the
public. A professor should not fall victim to a shadowy group
outside of the university, and he or she should not be the
subject of a scandal or smear campaign because of the claims
of one single student out of thousands.
