“Report: Academic Freedom and National Security in a Time of Crisis”
Special Committee on Academic Freedom and National Security in a Time of Crisis
The American Association of University Professors
October 3, 2003

This report, published roughly two years after 9/11, considers the repercussions of the Patriot Act on academic freedom. The report found that the Patriot Act restricts academic freedom by giving law enforcement agencies access to library and student records, restricts the publication of research results that are considered sensitive, and limits foreign students’ access to American institutions. Public response to 9/11 has also interfered with the normal function of institutions. (Back to academic freedom)
